Western set for a Super Sports Saturday on Oct. 24th

ROCK SPRINGS (OCTOBER 22, 2015) – Call it Super Sports Saturday.

This Saturday, Oct. 24, Western Wyoming Community College will host four athletic events – two preseason exhibitions, one regular-season home finale, and one Region IX North playoff match – in what may be the busiest non-tournament day of sports action at the Rock Springs campus this year.

The action begins at 10 a.m. in Rushmore Gymnasium with the Mustang Wrestling Intra-Squad Match. This is the team’s annual preseason exhibition event, in which Mustang wrestlers will square off against each other in preparation for their season opener at the Northwest College Open in Powell on Nov. 1. Western will not wrestle at home again until Friday, Dec. 18, against Northwest Kansas Tech, so this is fans’ chance to see the home squad in action early. Admission is free to this event.

At 2 p.m., Mustang Men’s Soccer will host Trinidad State Junior College at the Rock Springs Junior High field in the Region IX North quarterfinal matchup. This is the second consecutive year that Western has hosted a men’s soccer quarterfinal match, and the Mustangs are looking to advance their quest for a national tournament berth in front of a raucous home crowd. This will be the final home soccer match of 2015 for the Mustangs.

At 3 p.m., Mustang Volleyball will take the court in Rushmore Gymnasium for its Sophomore Night match versus Sheridan College. Although this is their regular-season finale, the Mustangs will be in action at home again for the Region IX North Tournament, which is scheduled for Nov. 4 – 7 at the Rock Springs campus. The Mustang team will also host Northwest College in a home match this Friday at 7 p.m. Normal admission will be charged for these two games.

Finally, at 7 p.m. in Rushmore Gymnasium, Mustang Men’s Basketball will host an Alumni Scrimmage featuring former players in preseason action against this year’s team. Admission is free to this exhibition event, which will be the Mustangs’ final preseason action before they begin non-conference regular-season play at home in the Western Wyoming Classic on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. against Impact Academy. That tournament continues Oct. 31 at 3 p.m. with the Mustangs’ game against region rival Laramie County Community College.

“This is definitely a big weekend for sports at Western, and we encourage all of our fans to come out and support our student-athletes,” said WWCC Athletic Director Lu Sweet. “We’re very excited to host the Region IX North quarterfinal game in men’s soccer and to honor our sophomore volleyball players at their final regular-season home match on Saturday. And our wrestlers and basketball players are just getting started on what promises to be a very exciting season for both teams. We welcome all of our fans and community supporters to campus for the first of several big weekends for Mustang athletics at Western!”
