WAHIAWA, Hawai’i. (Oct. 20, 2015) – After her first career top-five finish at the Denver Ron Moore Intercollegiate, sophomore Gabrielle Gibson continued her stellar play during the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Monday. Gibson is tied for second after she fired a 70 (-2) at the Leilehua Golf Course in Wahiawa, Hawai’i. The Cowgirls sit in eighth place with a tally of 306 (+18) after the first 18 holes of play.
“This is definitely an adjustment for us with elevation and grass conditions,” UW head coach Josey Stender said. “Putting and club selection takes a tremendous amount of patience and confidence, and we will improve on that tomorrow. Great playing again by Gabrielle (Gibson) today, she was confident and relaxed from the get go.”
Gibson’s 70 (-2) was her second-best round of the fall season. She shot a career-low 68 (-4) during the second round of the DU Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Oct. 10. With a 77 (+5) on Monday, freshman Kaylee Knadler sits tied for 35th with two rounds to go. Sophomore Klara Castillo posted a 79 (+7) during the round one and is tied for 51st, as junior Taylor Dorans and Megan Knadler are each one shot behind with an 80 (+8). Dorans and Megan Knadler are tied for 60th to round out the Cowgirl lineup.
Gibson recorded five birdies on the day, as Megan Knadler had one during the first 18 holes of play for the Cowgirls. Mississippi leads the team field after the first round with a 294 (+6). BYU’s Brooklyn Hocker leads the individual’s with a first-round total of 68 (-4).
UW will return to the course tomorrow morning for the second round of play beginning at 12 p.m., MT.
