Cowgirl Basketball Set to Begin Fall Drills on Tuesday

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 5, 2015) —  Head coach Joe Legerski and the University of Wyoming women’s basketball team completed their preseason workouts and are set to begin regular-season practices for the 2015-16 season.  The Cowgirls’ first practice is slated for Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. UW will continue on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for the remainder of the week.

“The number of new or one year players with six freshmen, five sophomores and one transfer has created a unique situation for our basketball program,” Legerski said.  “More time will be spent teaching the concepts of offense rather than refining the offense.  A greater responsibility will fall upon my two seniors, Marquelle (Dent) and Jordan (Kelley), to lead this program while the young players emerge.”

Legerski returns two starters and eight letterwinners from last season’s squad that went 16-14 overall and 10-8 in the Mountain West. In all, the squad consists of two seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and six true freshmen.

Of those returning players, senior Marquelle Dent will be the top honors candidate for Wyoming. Dent was a an All-Mountain West and All-Defensive team selection for the first time in her career in 2015 while averaging a team-high 17.7 points and six assists per game. She was also named to the WBCA Honorable Mention All-America Team and the WBCA All-Region VII Team. UW’s other senior Jordan Kelley will also be looked upon for leadership during the season. Kelley averaged 7.6 points and 7.1 boards on her way to taking MW Newcomer of the Year honors.

Wyoming will open up the regular season with three out of four home games in the Arena-Auditorium. UW will tip things off against Chadron State on Sunday, Nov. 15, followed by match-ups against the Saint Mary’s Gaels on Friday, Nov. 20 and UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Nov. 27.
