Wyoming Producers Target New Markets at Major Livestock Expo

(OCTOBER 13, 2015) — Wyoming producers intend to expand their markets this week at an annual livestock expo in Billings, Montana, according to state officials.

The Northern International Livestock Exposition is an opportunity for Wyoming breeders to show and sell cattle, distribute brochures and business cards and make new contacts with buyers outside of their typical marketing areas, according to Scott Keith, livestock genetics program manager for the Wyoming Business Council’s Agribusiness Division.

“Quality livestock from all over the region are shown, and those participating have received interest from buyers who picked up business cards or promotional material,” Keith said.

The Business Council has participated in the event, which runs through Saturday, since 2004.

Agriculture industry proponents also use the event to encourage the next generation of producers.

Wyoming donors and youth frequently participate in the merit heifer program, according to Cody Bainter, ag marketing and leadership coordinator for the Agribusiness Division. The event highlights students from the region who received donated heifers from local breeders.

The Northern International Livestock Exposition is nearly 50 years old, and has grown into one of the largest agricultural events in the Northwest. Exposure at an event this big is a major boon to Wyoming producers, Bainter explained.

“People come from the western U.S. to participate in the cattle shows,” Bainter said. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase Wyoming genetics and our ag industry.
